SUGGESTED REGIONAL PLANNING COMMITTEE ___________IN THE MTO AREA_______________
A suggestion for a Regional Planning Committee in the Mississippi Test Operation area is as follows:
Since the announcement of the selection of the Hancock Count" site for the Mississippi Test Operations in October, 1961, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as a new facility in the nation's Space exploration Program, the need for regional planning to cope with the area impact has become apparent. The potential growth of the Mississippi Test Operations impact area - Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River Counties in Mississippi and St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana - has created widespread interest in the region. Considerable interest has been shown in the immediate vicinity of the MTO site in Hancock County.
Community facilities to take care of the rapid population influx during the next two years is a matter of prime concern to MTO officials and community planners at the present time. Long range planning for the MTO impact area should necessarily receive more attention in the future. This is an activity that will require the coordinated efforts of all parties concerned.
The economic impact of the National Space Program on the MTO area as related to the 1700 permanent personnel on board by mid-19o5 has been projected as follows:

There will be approximately 3000 construction workers on the MTO site when construction nrojects hit their peak in 1964. These construction workers will be working for some 75 contractors. These people will be considered temporary. The permanent operating force which will maintain the MTO Facility and test the rocket stages .’ill be increased from the present approximately 145 workers to 1700 when testing begins in the summer of 1965 and gradually build up to 2500 as a permanent working force
