Samuel Jackson to Sarah Jackson
Clifton Decem 26th/58
Dear ma
Your kind letter of date 4th inst came a few days ago, And was read with pleasure, as all of your letters are. I never was so supprised in my life, as I was in seeing Pa brother and the Dr walking up from the Bayou. I saw them coming And took my spy glass and spied them at a distance I almost thought I was dreaming. I could not describe my feeling's the only thing that disappointed me was their short visite. I thought brother of course had resigned, when I saw him, but there is but one thing that will cause him to resign, And that you know. all of them looked well, and in good spirits. The Dr seemed to like this country very much, but I suppose he has told you all. Brother starts to day I supose for Carlsile. He must have taken you very much by surprise. You knew nothing of his coming so he told me. What kind of Christmas did you all spend? please to let me know when you write. I was invited to take my dinner with judge Odgen but did not accept the invitation, they had a dance there also the same night. Willis Clabiborne and my-self dined together at his house. Col C? invited me to dine with him on new years day but I dont know whether I shall go or not. The negros are dancing and enjoying them selves.
we have had very bad weather for the past few days, but I think it will be clear tomorrow. I am now gining every day And will now get through my crop in a few weeks, as Pa told me to run the new gin that you saw tryed, when you were down. it will gin from two to three bales a day. I have baled ten bags avegering
