Meeting set on Bay harbor project plans

BAY ST. LOUIS -- The public and the City Council will hear plans for the Bay’s harbor project today at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting at the Bay High auditorium includes a presentation from Moffatt & Nichol, an international engineering and marine consulting firm.
The public harbor with a nearly $18 million price tag will be at the foot of Main Street. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is in its final stages of permitting, Mayor Les Fillingame said.
Construction is set to begin in six to eight months. It should be finished in 18 months, the mayor said.
The Chamber of Commerce and city officials have been proponents of the harbor, which they say will be a catalyst for economic development and will encourage home and business owners to move in along the waterfront. The harbor is being permitted for 194 slips with the ability to go to 208.
The 10-year operational impact is estimated to include $39.3 million of total spending and $1.1 million in local and state taxes, Chamber Director Tish Williams said.
“We’re wanting it to be self-sufficient,” Fillingame said.
“The council’s biggest concern is that they never wanted it to be a financial burden on taxpayers. None of us do. I think it will carry its own weight satisfactorily,” he said.
The Corps of Engineers is building a new seawall along the beach.
Fillingame expects the area near the harbor-Fiiimgame	construction	site	to	be	completed	before	the	project
begins.
