? - tfHICH MY UNCLE ALFRED AND HIS FAMILY ALSO LIVED.THIS IS THE HOUSE WHERE Ml BROTHER PrILIP WAS BORN AUGUST 5,1919.ON LAMEUSE STREET NEXT TO US WAS THE COLSON GROCERY STORE,AND ACROSS THE STREET ON THE CORNER WAS A GAS STATION. FROM OUR HOUSE WE COULD SEE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BACK BAY OF BILOXI IN D'IBERVILLE,NOW KNOWN AS NORTH BILOXI.ON THE CHURCH GROUNDS IS A STONE MONUMENT COMMEMORATING THE LANDING OF IBERVILLE IN 1699. X USED TO CATCH CRABS FROM THE BRIDGE,NEAR THE DRAWBRIDGE WHERE THE BOATS WENT THROUGH.UNDER THE DRAWBRIDGE WAS A TEN FOOT BY TEN FOOT PLATFORM SET ^BOUT FOUR FEET ABOVE THE WATER. ST.JOHN'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS ONE BLOCK EAST ON BAY VIEW BOULEVARD near TWO SHRIMP FACTORIES AND WHEN THE WIND BLEW THE WRONG DIRECTION, WEOW! ST.JOHN'S CHURCH SCHOOL WAS THREE OR FOUR BLOCKS SOUTH ON MAIN STREET. ST.JOHN'S SCHOOL WAS LATER TURNED INTO A PUBLIC GRAMMAR SCHOOL.THE (iHURCH WAS FINALLY MOVED TO LAMEUSE AND BRADFORD WHERE IT STILL IS TODAY.OUR NEW GORENFLO GRAMMAR SCHOOL WAS BUILT ON LAMEUSE BETWEEN BRADFORD AND ELDER STREETS. * IN THE MEANTIME WE HAD MOVED TO THE NORTH CORNER OF LAMEUSE AND ELDER STREETS INTO ANOTHER JOUILLIAN HOUSE WHICH HAD BEEN SPLIT IN TWO.THE OTHER HALF WAS ON THE SOUTH CORNER AND WAS OCCUPIED BY A MEMBER OF THE JOUILLIAN FAMILY AT THIS TIME.MY GOOD FRIEND ELWOOD (KO) KELLY LIVED NEAR US ON ELDER STREET. MY SISTER ELVIRE OR ELVIRA(WE CALLED HER ? ELVEE " ),WAS MARRIED MARCH 17,1920,AND MOVED INTO THE OTHER HALF OF THE JOULLIAN HOUSE.MY SISTER MARGARET WAS MARRIED DECEMBER 14,1919,AND MOVED INTO A HOUSE ON REYN-QI? STREET NEAR BRADFORD STREET.I WAS MARGARET'S CHAPERON WHEN HARRY BONEY WAS COURTING HER.ELVIRE MOVED TO REYNOIR STREET ACROSS FROM MARGARET'S HOUSE.IN THOSE DAYS PEOPLE BORROWED ODDS AND ENDS FROM EACH OTHER.IT WAS ONE OF MY DUTIES AS A BOY TO RUN BACK AND FORTH WITH THESE VARIOUS ARTICLES WITHOUT GETTING HIT BY THE TROLLEY CAR.SOMETIMES IT WAS A VERY CLOSE RACE.ANOTHER SOURCE OF FUN WAS GRABBING A FREE TROLLEY RIDE BY HANGING ON TO THE REAR OF THE TROLLEY. THIS CONTINUAL MOVING FROM ONE HOUSE TO ANOTHER REMINDS ONE OF A CHESS GAME: WHOSE MOVE IS IT NOW?WELL,IT TURNED OUT TO BE OURS.WE MOVED TO ONE OF THE MAVAR'S HOUSES .NEXT DOOR TO THE MARVARS AND TWO DOORS FROM FRANK IBELE, WHO WAS ALSO A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE.SAM AND NICK MAVAR WERE FRIENDS, TOO, AS WERE MARSHALL RYAN AND FRANK KEEGAN.MARSHALL' S BROTHER OLIVER WAS AN ICEMAN. THE MARVARS HAD A GROCERY STORE,AND TODAY THEY OWN A SHRIMP PACKING COMPANY ON EAST BEACH IN BILOXI. MY SISTER BEULAH WAS MARRIED FEB.23,1925.MY FATHER BUILT HER HOUSE AT 800 CROESUS STREET WHERE SHE AND HER HUSBAND,FRANK DUVIC, AND THEIR SON LIVE TODAY. WE BUILT OUR FIRST HOUSE IN BILOXI ON BRADFORD STREET BEHIND MARSHALL RYAN'S HOUSE.OUR BACK YARD EXTENDED BACK TO A LARGE EMPTY LOT WHICH WAS CONNECTED TO ELVIRE'S BACK YARD.IN THIS LOT WAS THE LARGEST LIVE OAK TREE THAT I HAD EVER SEEN.WE USED TO PLAY TARZAN IN ITS HUGH LIMBS.THERE WAS AN OLD INDIAN WHO LIVED ON FAYARD STREET.HE USED TO COLLECT AND SELL JUNK.IT IS POSSIBLE THAT HE WAS OF THE CHOCTAW TRIBE OR PERHAPS A MEMBER OF THE BILOXI TRIBE,ACROSS FROM KEEGAN1S HOUSE LIVED A NEGRO HORSE TRAINER.THE HORSES HE TRAINED COULD REALLY PRANCE AND DO FANCY TRICKS. MY MOTHER LIKED TO GO TO CHURCH EVERY MORNING,COME HELL OR HIGH WATER. SINCE ST.JOHN'S CHURCH WAS SO FAR AWAY SHE STARTED GOING TO OUR LADY OF SORROWS,WHICH WAS ON CROESUS AND DIVISION STREETS,ABOUT THREE OR FOUR BLOCKS AWAY.THIS WAS REALLY A CATHOLIC CHURCH FOR THE COLORED PEOPLE,BUT SOME WHITE CATHOLICS HABITUALLY WENT TO MASS THERE DURING THE WEEK AND?ON SUNDAYS.ITS PASTOR WAS A HOLY AUGUSTINIAN PRIEST.HE WAS ALSO A GOOD PREACHER AND HIS VOICE WAS LOUD AND CLEAR.I LIKED FATHER MULLIN;IN FACT,I USED TO RING THE CHURCH BELL FOR HIM TO START MASS.HE WANTED ME TO STUDY FOR 2
