For better than a half century the diBenedetto family have been recognized among the substantial, industrious, leading families of
gaged in business here since 1900.
It was in that year that Joseph ' diBenedetto and his wife came to Bay St. Louis from, iheir Independence, La. home, intending to make their visit a temporary one.
Charmed with the environment,
Mr. and Mrs. diBenedetto decided to remain and make Bay St. Louis their permanent home, so he and his bride, the former Josephine Alessi, bought a piece of property and began growing strawberries, which they marketed and sold to a local grocer. It was diBenedetto who first introduced the Klondike berry to Hancock County. This berry which was so successful in the Louisiana Strawberry Belt did equally well here. Prosperity began for the family in their new home. After a few years of strawberry and truck farming, Joseph and Josephine decided to enter the grocery business. Seven children were born to Joseph and Josephine, four sons, Anthony, George, Joseph and Dorn, inic, and three daughters, Mary (Mirs. Harry Benjamin) Jennie (Mrs. J. C. Roland) and Nina ?( (Mrs. Paul Doyle.)
The boys received their school- Sv ing at S't. Stanislaus, and the girls 2-' all attended and were graduated from S. J. A. Mrs. Benjamin, before her marriage, became interested in the business operated by her parents, eventually became manager.
About eight years' ago Mr. and Mrs. diBenedetto decided to retire, and leased the* modern beach building, which they had built to another grocery business. Mrs. Benjamin, who was not married at this time left for New York to visit her brother-in-law and sister, Major and Mrs. J. C. Roland, and was at this time that she met
