Bay St. Louis architect Fred Wagner was on hand Thursday for one of the first public tours of the restored Gulf and Ship Island Railroad Building in Gulfport, a 1902 structure now housing offices for Mississippi Power Company.
Wagner had worked with Mississippi Power Comapny Managers of Economic Development Chuck Ueltschey and Charles Beasley, Gulfport Contractor Roy Anderson Jr. and additional Mississippi Power personnel for two years to restore the structure, which in 1925 had served as the utility?s first corporate headquarters.
Media Relations Supervisor John Hutchinson said the project had cost the utility more than $1.5 million, but was unable to provide a more specific figure because costs are still being calculated.
The $1.5 million does not include the price of purchase from a New Orleans, La., family.
Wagner assisted with the restoration of the exterior to a classic revival style featuring arched windows, making the building look much as it did in 1902 with some exceptions such as an additional door added during the 1930s and modern ramps to provide access for handicapped visitors.
