The Hancock County Food Pantry has now been in operation for a month and has been providing a very important need for our county.
Numerous families in need of food on an emergency basis have been aided by the Food Pantry.
The organization is sponsored by churches, individuals, organizations and businesses of the county.
Leontine C. DeRocha and Inna Piazza are the chief administrators, and are among the people who really pushed for the formation of such an organization for our county. They now report there is a need for a refrigerator, freezer or both.
The organization does not have a way to store perishable foods at its location in the old Valena C. Jones School building, Old Spanish Trail and Bookter Street in Bay St. Louis.
If you have a used refrigerator or freezer and would like to donate it to a very good cause, give Mrs. DeRocha a call at 467-2790, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, 9 a.m. to noon.
Those are also the hours the Food Pantry is open, and it is manned by volunteers from the county’s churches and Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
The primary purpose of the Food Pantry is to feed people of Hancock County in an emergency, such as from the interruption of someone’s income through loss of job, fire, disruption in the home, illness or other valid reason.
Referrals are made by the Welfare Department, Board of Health, priests and ministers and organizations.
This is just a temporary source of supplemental aid for several days.
The Hancock County Food Pantry is a chartered non-profit organization and is operated by donations from churches, individuals, businesses, and organizations.
Several community churches as well as businesses collected food for the Food Pantry.
