Hancock County Historical Society Board of Directors Meeting, 5:00 P.M., July 11, 1977
MINUTES
The Hancock County Historical Society, Board of Directors, met on Monday,
July 11, 1977 at 5:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce Office with Capt. Max Berns presiding.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read. Two corrections were made.
The Society checking account was $257.95 rather than $251.95 and the earliest marriage license found in the Courthouse was recorded in 1853 rather than 1858.
Capt. Berns reported that our membership in the National Trust for Historical Preservation had been renewed. He said he will continue efforts to arrange a trip to the King Tut Exhibit in New Orleans.
Capt. Berns recommended that a motion be made to find, set apart and establish a boundary for a historical district in Bay St. Louis as recommended by the Historical Preservation Com. and to obtain copies of the Historical Site Survey Form. He will have 300 copies made for the Committee's use.
Capt. Berns reported on having heard from Prof. Ward of SMU regarding an offer made by Barthe, the sculptor, that he make and erect a statue to St.
Louis, to be put up in this area, for the cost of material and the transportation of it to the chosen site.
A motion was made and carried that this project be pursued, with communications to be set up with Barthe and that publicity be given the project as it continues.
It was thought funds could be raised by local firms and individuals.
Mr. Weston will give a copy of the history of the Weston Lumber Co. to Mrs. Griffith, our historian, if she does not already have one.
Capt. Berns reported on a letter he had received asking any information that we might have about Lt. L.M. Jones, CSA that might be in our Courthouse-to be sent to Mr. Jim Stevens. There was an article about him in the New Orleans Times in 1866.
Capt. Berns will check with the Gulf Regional Planning Commission to find out if they have surveyed any historical buildings.
Mrs. Boudreaux reported that we now have a membership of 70 people.
The making of micro film copies of various articles and documents be made from old newspapers in the Courthouse was discussed and will continue at a later date.
Mrs. Paulk asked that methods be set up for the Society File Room in the library, to be made available when needed. This plan will be worked on.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
