Holland, and Charles' father, our Carl Heitzmann. We find him with parents in the 1870 and 1880 census of Summit, Pike Co., MS.
Jacob ?Jake? Heitzmann was the son of Carl Heitzmann and Susanna ?Anna? Sunder. He was born on March 31, 1856 in New Orleans, LA. His birth is on record with the Louisiana State Office of Vital Records. We also have his baptism record from St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Orleans, and it says he was baptized on May 13, 1856. Both the birth certificate and baptism record name his parents. The 1860 census of New Orleans shows him, age 4, living with his parents. The name used was ?Heitsmann,? and they lived in the 2nd Ward, House #1313, and family #2454. He also appears in the 1870 census of Pike Co., MS with parents and is now age 13. He is listed in the 1880 census of Summit, Pike Co., MS on page 6, House 57, as ?Jacob Hutsmund,? age 24, blacksmith, born in Louisiana and with wife ?Maggie Hutsmund.?
Jacob married Margaret Louise ?Maggie? Riehlmann on November 13, 1879 in McComb City, MS in the Presbyterian Church there. While we have been unable to get an ?official? record of this marriage, we do have a copy of Jacob's Family Bible that lists this date and place which is more than enough proof for us. Margaret Louise was born in New Orleans on September 29, 1860 to immigrant parents, Johann Georg ?George? Riehlmann and Anna Maria ?Mary? Henecko. George was a native of Oberweiler im Tal, Germany and Mary was a native of Bellheim, Germany. Margaret died on August
14,	1927 in Long Beach, MS and is buried next to Jacob. This family will be covered in a separate piece of research on them.
Following his marriage, Jacob lived and worked in Summit, MS. Older family members told us he was an excellent blacksmith and wheelwright, trades he learned from his father. We know he was still in Summit in 1890 for his daughter, Maggie, was bom there based on the family bible. He apparently moved to Ocean Springs, MS around 1891. We know Jacob moved from Summit to Ocean Springs for his son, Alvin Heitzmann, was bom there in 1892 as recorded in the family bible. The next child, Ruth, was bom in Bay St. Louis in 1894, according to the bible as were the remaining children through 1903.
We find Jacob buying a lot on Goodchildren Street, in Bay St. Louis in 1895 (Hancock Co. DB
-	S, p. 96-97,) indicating he was making his move permanent. In 1898, Jacob owns a Blacksmith and Wheelwright shop on Main Street in Bay St. Louis (Sea Coast Echo - Dec. 24, 1898). Jacob's 1925 obituary said he had worked for the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad for ?26? years - thus he started with them in 1899. He resigned from the railroad in 1900, according to an old local news article. In 1903, he was appointed City Sanitary Inspector by the Mayor of Bay St. Louis (Sea Coast Echo, 5/16/1903).
In 1909, he moved to Hattiesburg, MS to work and stayed there approximately one year according to his daughter, Lelia. The obituary of his stepmother in the Summit Sentinel on August 19, 1909 confirms this. He was back in Bay St. Louis when the census was taken in May 1910. Because of his job with the railroad, he moved to Gulfport, MS in 1912 and stayed there until his death in 1925.
From the various news articles, he was an active and popular citizen of Bay St. Louis. According to his daughter, Myrtle, he was working in Gulfport for the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad at their repair shop when he got caught in some heavy machinery crushing his chest on November 3, 1925. He died three days later at the hospital in Gulfport on November 6, 1925. His death certificate confirms this, and says he died of ?internal injuries? as a result of an accident. This record says his parents were ?Charles Heitzmann and Ann Sanders,? natives of Germany (this information was supplied by his widow). His daughter, Myrtle, told us that Jacob ?could taste liver? in his mouth while in the hospital. She said her father was in excellent shape when the accident occurred - keep in mind that he was 72 years old at the time. She also told us that he was 5'11? tall, 180 lbs., and had blue eyes.
