The citizens of Scranton, mainly constitute an intelligent, moral, orderly and law-abiding community. As it is in the immediate vicinage of the Port of [Pascagoula, whence an immense export of lumber and timber is constantly going on to the four quarters of the globe, it is to be expected, that occasionally, a turbulent element crops out. But the efficiency of its legally constituted officers generally keeps the transient rabble in wholesome awe of the majesty of the law. The resident citizens and population generally of Scranton are highly respectable. Among its prominent citizens are W. M. Denny, County and Circuit Court Clerk, Frank Lewis, Sheriff. P. K. Mayers, editor of the Democrat-Star, Aid. S. R. Thompson, engaged in mercantile pursuits, Judge W. E. Chidsev, J. I. Ford, attorney at law, H. B. Everitt, attorney at law, T. E. During the Fall, Winter and Spring the fish and oyster industry becomes an important factor in the business of the place. On the west bank of the Pascagoula river, immediately west of Scranton, is the village of West Pascagoula. It has a large saw mill, and the creosoting works of the L. & N. R. R., where the timbers used for piers,'piling and other constructions which reach and extend below'the water-line, are treated, by a steam process, to a creosote bath ; an effective means of protection against, the destructive attacks of the teredo, an insect which honey-combs and eventually destroys timber thus used "unless so protected.
