The play: On the surface, this is the story of the 1939 murder trial of Karen Andre, accused of killing her boss and lover, Bjorn Faulkner, the infamous Swedish financier. (But what Ayn Rand was attempting to present was what she called “sense of life." The characters' attitude toward life is shown as the confrontation of two extremes: passionate self-assertiveness, self-confidence, ambition, independence versus conventionality, servility, envy, hatred, power-lust). As the jury is drawn each night from the audience, the play has two endings, depending upon the verdict.

The play:Charlie Baker is a depressed Englishman who wants to be left alone to wallow in his personal miseries. How better to assure that than to h up in a Georgia fishing lodge, disguised as a foreigner who can't speak English? Poor Charlie. Before he knows it, he is embroiled in the various tribuli tions of other occupants of the lodge, all of who want either to unload their secrets on him or to help the poor fella learn to communicate.
