generations of Coast residents who have nurtured and cherished the natural beauty of our scenic region, particularly those who have endeavored to preserve one of our greatest treasures . . .
Sixty miles of Mississippi coastline is home to majestic mammoth live oaks, some reaching to the water’s edge.
The Live Oak - Quercus virginiana - has a rounded top with horizontal spreading arms as large and as heavy as the trunks of other mature trees. In spite of hurricanes and other natural enemies, many of these centuries old Spanish moss draped trees survive - a welcoming canopy to visitors and residents alike.
The oldest known specimen in the State is estimated at 766 years with a circumference of 28 feet. It dominates the grounds of South Mississippi Regional Center in Long Beach. A complete guide to ancient live oaks will be provided at all welcome centers and tour locations throughout the Pilgrimage.
