Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory
The Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NOARL) was established at the John C. Stennis Space Center in October 1989 to be the principal Navy corporate laboratory performing oceanographic and atmospheric environmental research.
The Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity (NORDA) and the Institute for Naval Oceanography (INO), both located at Stennis Space Center, merged with the Naval Environmental Prediction Research Facility (NEPRF) to form NOARL.
Combining the three organizations allows for more efficient coordination of research results and better coupling of knowledge and models for use in the operational Navy.
The synergism achieved from the combined research efforts puts NOARL on the cutting edge of the development of methods and capabilities to quantify the impact of the environment of the oceans and atmosphere on Navy systems.
The above illustration is an image of the meandering Gulf Stream as observed by an infrared satellite. Remote sensing is utilized to nowcast and forecast the oceans’ internal “weather systems. ”
