sioners, and are under their direct control. No specific qualifications are laid down for policemen, but each new employee is given a training course through an F. B. I. extension school. The chief of police has also had a course in the prevention of juvenile delinquency.
The mayor presides at all trials for minor offenses, other cases being remanded to county officials. Approximately one hundred cases are heard each year by the mayor. Fines seldom exceed the minimum fee of $1.00.
The Police Department is provided with a car for patrol duty.
RECREATION
The local government provided no recreational facilities but has recently passed an ordinance to appoint five persons to serve on a municipal recreation board. The duty of this honorary board will be to plan for a public sand beach, pier, playground, etc.
At present there is a public playground on the beach between Bookter and Sycamore Streets, provided by a women’s civic club. There is also a large and well-equipped Youth Center on the highway opposite Bay High School. The Youth Center, under the supervision of a board of local citizens, is in charge of a trained directress, and open to all young people between the ages of twelve to twenty.

Opportunities are ample for swimming, boating, and both salt-water and fresh-water fishing. The newly built Yacht Club, provides excellent recreational advantages for its members and their guests.
There are three movie theatres in Bay Saint Louis, one of them a drive-in. There is also an active Little Theatre, whose plays are open to the public.
HOUSING
The government of Bay Saint Louis does not provide any protection or assistance to people’s housing. No statute covers sanitation, zoning, a building code, or local housing authority.
Application has been made for federal funds to build quarters for people in the low income bracket, in a slum clearance project.
Some supervision is given through the right to issue building permits. A permit is rejected only when residents in the vicinity petition its withdrawal. The only regulation regarding local housing is one provided by the Public Health Department of Mississippi which has the power to compel home owners to install toilets when the health of others is endangered.
