HISTORY OF LOGTOV/N METHODIST CHURCH
Although there is no record in the files of the Mississippi Conference Historical Committee of a Church at Logtown before lCo'O, this Church does date back several years before that time. About 1G75, or nearly 90 years ago, Mr. Henry Weston, prominent pioneer lumberman of the community situated on the banks of Pearl River, realized that it should have a Church. He was instrumental in bringing to Logtown, Rev. Inman W. Cooper, who although only 20 years of age, had already shown promise in his chosen field.
The first Church in logtown was built by Mr. Weston and the lumber company bearing his name on a piece of land given to the Methodist Church by the family of Mr. Henry Carre, the same location where our Church still stands. For many years the original church was known as Cooper*s Chapel, in honor of its first pastor who organized it.
Except for Rev. Cooper, we have no record of the names of the pastors of the Church prior to 1680, but since that time there have been 42 pastors serving it.
For many years our Church and its organizations were quite active and this can be directly credited for the almost complete absence of crime in the community, even during the years when the mills were in full production and Logtown had a population of nearly 2,000. The young people of the community in by-gone days were lively in the Epworth League for many years, and the W.S.C.S. i3 still busy with their regular meetings and church duties The Sunday School was well attended until it was discontinued because of limited membership. Mr. J.S.Otis was Superintendent for 43 years with Mr. D.R. Weston assuming that office for- 20 years.
Logtown Methodist Church has done much for four generations in molding the raster and lives of its members and .of othero who cane uacler its influence.. We are also proud of ora pastors who served our church at the beginni.-g of their Christian ministry and then went ovi to large, chvrrshos and aor>c iniror-v.ar.t dutie®,
