show it to their children. The fine tradition of winning this trophy should continue for many years to come.
Commodore Charles J. Lozano Memorial Trophy - Mr. Charles J. Lozano was a New Orleans businessman with a home in the Waveland/Bay St. Louis area. He and his family spent a lot of time on the Gulf Coast and were very active members of BWYC. Mr Lozano was elected and served as Commodore of Bay-Waveland Yacht Club in 1959. Along with the advice and assistance of Commodore Harry Chapman, Commodore Lozano’s family selected and presented this beautiful trophy to BWYC sometime in the mid 1980s, to be used as a perpetual sailing award in the memory of Commodore Charles J. Lozano. This beautiful trophy is a silver plated soup serving bowl with handles and a removable top. There are differing opinions among knowledgeable people about what it actually is. It could very well be a large sugar bowl. It is practical and versatile. The trophy stands 21" tall and sits on a 14" X 14" three level brown wooden base. The base the trophy sits on is 9" high. The trophy measures 11" from handle to handle. The Lozano Trophy was first awarded to Lucien Gex, Jr. in 1987 and last awarded in 2002 to young William Hadden for very impressively winning the popular BWYC Wednesday Night Racing Series.
A special follow-up note of interest about a relationship between the C. A.
Breath, Sr. Memorial trophy and William Hadden is that after the article about the Breath Trophy was written and printed in the November Jib Sheet my memory was refreshed when I was reminded that young William Hadden, the current winner of the Charles Lozano Trophy is also a great great grandson of Captain Charles A. Breath for whom the C. A. Breath, Sr. Memorial trophy is dedicated in the memory of. This additional piece of information would have been another good reason for writing about the Breath trophy.
Commodore Kenneth W. Pepperdene Memorial Trophy - Mr. Kenneth W. Pepperdene was from England and he lived a good part of his life in the Bay St. Louis area of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He had a home on the Jourdan River where he lived with his family and according to close friends, he commuted to New Orleans for his work as an executive with the Standard Fruit and Steamship Company. He and his family were active and longtime members of Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis. Commodore Pepperdene was a loyal and very highly regarded Commodore of BWYC. He was elected three (3) times to serve as Commofore of BWYC for the years of 1961, 1962 and 1963. He actually served 2 full terms and part of his 3rd term in 1963. He died in office as Commodore in I963 which was the year that BWYC won its first of 15 Sir Thomas J. Lipton Cup Championships. BWYC also won its first Junior Lipton Championship that year of 1963. The Commodore Kenneth W. Pepperdene Memorial Trophy was provided as a gift in approximately 1964 to BWYC to be awarded annually to the "Winner of the A-Class" The Pepperdene Trophy is a very attractive large highly polished silver plated wine cooler which stands 14" tall
