A so, and visit with their many friends along the coast, entertaining with a flair on their large yacht. The Colonel is an expert on wine cookery, and can also spin a yarn with the saltiest of seagoers. The Colonel’s Lady, who does not spend her time extolling the virtues of her native state, has made friends with the fishing folk here, in Florida and New Orleans, is herself one of the best fishermen around, and is also an authority on shells and driftwood to be found on the islands and beaches.
Last Christmas their floating home was gaily decorated with magnolia leaves, holly, palmetto and other native greens. Their strings of lights lit up the whole harbor. Next Christmas, no doubt, every little boat in the harbor will be similarly decorated.
Just up the hill from the harbor is the entrance to still another world. Turn right at the sign to Shearwater Pottery and drive slowly over the winding lane through virgin pine trees to the show room, where its famous ware is displayed. Let one of the Andersons (it’s a family affair) tell you the story of their ceramics and the interesting artists who make it. Above ALL, don’t try to tell Mrs. Anderson, Sr. about Roseville Pottery, or the piece you brought back from California. She likes “Shearwater” and the way they do it.
In this mercenary world it is a treat to find individuals like the Andersons who have refused to capitalize on their talents and mass produce their pottery, murals and watercolors. Bob, one son, has won a place in the art world and has exhibited in most of the better museums. His best works bring fabulous prices, but when the Ocean Springs citizens asked him to paint murals, depicting the landing of D’Iberville, on the Community House walls, he quoted them a firm price of $1.50!
You will not have an opportunity to visit with Bob, as he is very shy, but his mother, Mrs. Anderson, will give you a good lesson in art appreciation, and may end up giving you a scolding as she thinks anyone CAN paint and should.
