Sr., a former pastor, preached the sermon of the day.
Also during Rev. Walton's pastorate the old parsonage behind the Church and the old Educational Building on the corner of Main and Court Streets were razed and a new Education Building was constructed (1973) at the approximate cost of $90,000.00. At last Main Street United Methodist Church had an Education Building that would house the entire Church School under one roof.
Dr. Gilbert Oliver, our present pastor, has seen the debt paid in full on the Education Building (1976), the outside of the Church Building and Fellowship Hall painted, and plans drawn up to enclose and utilize the space between the Church and Fellowship Hall.
The Education Building will be dedicated today, September 18, 1977, by Bishop Mack B. Stokes.
Main Street United Methodist Church also celebrates its 125th anniversary today with a special program and anniversary observations. After Church, a lunch will be served in the newly dedicated Education Building so that members and guests can enjoy seeing and using this fine facility.
The church building is considered to be an outstanding example of Carpenter Gothic architecture. The glazing and installation of the original windows is of very fine quality and workmanship.
The original communion service is contained in a wall display case constructed by the late Mr. Wallace Chevis as was the repository housing the "Book of Remembrance”, the permanent honors and memorial records of the church.
Generations of local families have made Main Street United Methodist their church home. Children baptized, confirmed, reared in Church School, and married here, now see their children and grandchildren following in the tradition envisioned and established by Shieldsboro’s early founding fathers to the Glory of God.
