U.S. Geological Survey The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), part of the Department of the Interior, is the principal federal agency responsible for collecting, analyzing and archiving hydrologic data needed to plan, develop and manage the water resources of the United States. Survey facilities at Stennis Space Center include the Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility which has national responsibility for the design, testing, evaluation, repair, calibration, warehousing and distribution of hydrologic instrumentation and related equipment. This equipment is available to USGS offices and to other federal agencies worldwide. The Office of Surface Water has the responsibility of providing technical coordination for surface water problems. Two projects located at SSC are the modeling project which develops computer models to assist in solving surface water problems, and the laboratory project which operates a 35,000 square foot indoor hydraulics laboratory. U.S. Geological Survey personnel are involved in a variety of assignments ranging from collecting, analyzing and archiving hydrologic data to designing and testing instrumentation in support of the agency’s mission to plan, develop and manage the nation’s water resources.
