USM?s art collection gains Barthe
Richmond Barthe, international figure in the world of sculpture, born and reared in Bay St. Louis, has had one of his works, ?The Awakening of Africa? donated to the University of Southern Mississippi by Bobby Chain of Hattiesburg.
The piece will be added to USM?s art collection.
Barthe is the recipient of many awards including an honorary MA from Xavier University and a honorary doctorate of fine arts from St. Francis College.
This year the artist?s work is represented in the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, with a bust of Dr. George Washington Carver.
Barthe?s works are displayed in the Whitney and Metropolitan museums, and in many art institutions, universities, and churches throughout the United States. Internationally, his works are represented in India, the West Indies, Haiti, and in private collections.
Beginning as a painter, Barthe turned to sculpting in 1928.
In relating how the university received this particular piece of art, Dr. Jeff Bowman, chairman of the USM art department, said that Chain, the donor, is interested in art and wanted to make some sort of contribution to USM?s existing collection. Certain faculty members and Chain then decided that it would be appropriate to
have a work by a native Mississippian.
?We contacted Barthe in N.Y. and then made the selection, which is symbolic of the black struggle." Bowman commented.
The art department chairman further
added. '11 all stems from an individual in the community who wanted to provide something to the university. Tins is an excellent addition to our collection."
