He was active in many social and civic organizations throughout his life and received many awards over the years for work within the community. 1938 he married Bertha Marguerite ?Margaret? Dubuisson in Pass Christian, MS. They had:
1.	George Everett Heitzmann, Jr. - bom on December 18, 1939 and died March 16, 1940 in Bay St. Louis. He is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery with a head-marker.
2.	Marilyn Margaret Heitzmann - bom October 27, 1941 in Bay St. Louis. She married Thomas Earl Ruckman in Bay St. Louis on June 14, 1962 and later divorced after her children were born. She married again to Jesse Cardenas who had children by a previous marriage, and they live in Atwater, CA. She had four children by Ruckman:
