Mashulaville was the site of a village of Native American people long before white settlers came to Mississippi.
In 1830, the Choctaw chief Mashulatubbe lived here. It was in that year that President Andrew Jackson?s foreign policy advocated the signing of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, thereby forcing the Choctaw Indians to be moved west of the Miss. River. Mushulatubbe signed the treaty whereby 2/3 of the state of Mississippi was opened up for settlement. His plans to be a U.S. citizen and remain here were thwarted. When he resisted the U.S. soldiers who came to remove
him, he was handcuffed and forced to go to Oklahoma. So goes American democracy.
Since 1968, the Mashulaville Dormitory has been home to a ^ Mennonite witness and<^ service ministry in this area.
In 2005, dislocated persons from Hurricane Katrina found shelter here.
