THE M483A1 ICM ARTILLERY PROJECTILE
The latest and most sophisticated generation of the Army's improved conventional munitions (ICM) includes the M483A1 155 millimeter artillery projectile. This projectile is fired by the 155 millimeter howitzer, the direct and general support artillery piece of the Army's combat divisions. The M483A1 projectile contains a cargo of eighty-eight grenade "sub-muni-tions." When the projectile reaches a predetermined point in its trajectory, the grenades are expelled from the rear of the shell and dispersed over the target area which may be more than ten miles from the gun location. Each grenade explodes on impact, performing a dual function as both an anti-personnel (fragmentation) and anti-materiel (armor penetration) munition. The M483A1 projectile provides the Army with greater flexibility and wider area coverage than previous conventional projectiles.
