materials. The Rev. Thomas Ozanne described this first church as a “neat Gothic structure.”
Then came the Civil War, and both the church and the rectory were destroyed and title to the land lost. By this time few communicants were left, and in 1881, St. Luke’s was dropped from the roll of parishes.
The few who remained gradually joined with a small Episcopal Church,'called Grace Church, which was located on Nicholson Avenue in Waveland. But this did not last long because the building subsequently was destroyed by fire.
Christ Church was established in 1889. The first services were held in the home of Hattie Crowell on North Beach after the previous church was destroyed.- By 1890, the cornerstone for the new Christ Church was laid on North Beach adjacent to Boardman Avenue.
In 1901, Christ Church was admitted to the diocese as a mission. Then, in 1904, the church was moved on rollers down Dunbar Avenue to a central location on the corner of North Beach and Carroll Avenue.
Christ Church was consecreated on July 8, 1913, a parish house was erected, and in 1947, three Sunday School classrooms were added.
In 1948, the Rev. Charles R. Johnson came from Omaha, Neb. as priest in charge of the mission. In 1950, with 134 registered communicants, Christ Church was granted parish status. In that same year, Christ Episcopal Day School was started by the rector, beginning as a kindergarten with Mrs. W. E. Bartram as the first teacher. By 1970, the school had grown to include a high school being built in Pass Christian and was incorporated separately from the church as Coast Episcopal Schools, Inc.
Then came August 17, 1969. Few could realize what the moments ahead would
mean, or how incredibly destructive Hurricane Camille would prove to be. In the wake of the dawn, Christ Church buildings were demolished. A twisted cross, the former Processional Cross was recovered and is now on the Baptismal Fount in the front of the church.
For 20 months, the congregation met for services in the day school, using a portable organ and altar. On April 18, 1971, in the Easter season, a new Christ Church arose and was dedicated to the Glory of God and stands as an indestructible Spirit within His people.
On the first day of March, 1984, the Rev. Charles Johnson retired, after serving Christ Church for 36 years. He was honored by the new rector and vestry being named the first rector emeritus of Christ Church. His wife, Harriett was also honored by having the Harriett Guild named after her.
The Rev. Arthur E. (Nick) Johnson was called from Athens, Ga. to be the second rector of Christ Church and began his duties on July 15, 1985. The church now members more than 331 communicants with people from every walk of life from Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Pass Christian and Dia-mondhead. A large variety of groups and activities bind our life in the Lord together.
In front of the church, overlooking the water is the Memorial Garden, completed in 1986 and dedicated on May 17, 1987 by . T Bishop Duncan Gray. It is a place of quiet and serene beauty overlooking the waters of the Gulf. Cremated remains of departed par-, ishioners or their families may be scattered in the garden.
The church is open 24 hours a day. The office is located upstairs in Johnson Hall. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30-12:30, 467-7757.
