The Thursday, May 19 meeting will be an excursion to the Logtown cemetery, a repeat of a very successful 1988 outing. As a further memento of that day, we are re-issuing the special Logtown pamphlet prepared by Charles Gray for the occasion, with a few updates and expanded maps.
We will gather at the Lobrano House at 10 a.m. and proceed in a decorated caravan to Logtown where a table, chairs and toilet facilities will be available. There is a beautiful shaded spot beneath a large spreading oak within the cemetery fence. The road is blacktop as far as the cemetery, and the remaining few hundred feet to the river is an excellent gravel roadway.
Bring a bag lunch or sandwich, and your society will serve soft drinks, ice and water. There will be no charge for participation this month.
Please call 467-4090 for reservations. Bring your car if you wish, but it isn't necessary.
Roy Baxter of Pearlington, whose family is closely linked to the history of Logtown, has graciously agreed to be our resident historian and guide for the day.
Many foundations remain as Reminders of a town that used to be" where 3,000 people lived along the banks of the Pearl River until the several smll towns were torn down or moved in 1962 to make room for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration facility, since re-named Stennis Space Center. There is a superb view of the Pearl River from the site of old downtown Logtown where once stood a hotel, a shimming pool, a silent movie house, the sawmill and its large commissary which sold everything from ladies' hats to coffins. As late as 1961 there were 60 families in Logtown. There was an eight-grade school, a grocery, two churches, a Masonic Lodge and a post office. Today only the cemetery remains, popular with history buffs and bird watchers.
