Donald,
Lamar McCown forwarded your e-mail to me for a response. I looked at the copy of the deed you had sent to Lamar, and it appears the land described is a portion of Sec. 29, T. 7 S., R. 14 W., St. Stephens Meridian in Hancock County, Mississippi. Our records show all of fractional Sec. 29, containing 73.80 acres, was patented by the GLO to a Mads A. Thompson under Jackson cash certificate #34210 dated August 14, 1899.
We only have records of the first transaction whereby the United States passed title to the original purchaser, homesteader, etc. - anything beyond that first record has to be researched at the state archives or county courthouse level. Perhaps your ancestor did not purchase land directly from the General Land Office, in which case his name would not show up in our database. It may also be possible there is a variation of the spelling.
If you have any further questions, please let us know. Thanks!
