Bay St. Louis, Waveland, Diamondhead A Resort Paradise In 1970, the local development of Diamondhead sprang from the drawing board of its promoters, etching itself amongst the piney woods north of the Bay of St. Louis. Sixty-four hundred acres were developed with a network of streets and cul de sacs flowing out of the bayous and rivers of the pine hills of Gulf Coast Mississippi. During the past twenty-five years, Diamondhead has flourished. As of 1995, some 5,000 people make this resort their permanent address. With about 2500 permanent residential homes, Diamondhead is a complete, private community established for people of all ages. Its relaxed atmosphere and many recreational amenities, make this a good place for professional and business inhabitants to retreat to at the end of a busy day. Diamondhead's ten square miles are surrounded by water on three sides, but accessible by Interstate 10. It is a "gated community" with 24-hour guard houses at its two entrances. Young families with children find Diamondhead with its safety, cleanliness, and recreational and group activities available for both children and parents alike to be a good area within which to raise a family. The community excels in its offerings to senior citizens with its many supportive organizations, fishing and golfing recreation, crime free environment, proximity to many other cities, and its own health, medical and nursing facilities. Diamondhead's gently rolling terrain is also a pleasant diversion from the surrounding predominantly flat coastal topography. Diamondhead is located at a central point of the Crescent surrounding the Bay, thereby allowing its residents quick access to the beaches in either Hancock or Harrison counties. Diamondhead, is on higher ground with little threat of flooding, containing bayous, rivers, and small lakes, with the Bay of St. Louis at its feet. It has many amenities including two complete golf courses, swimming pools, twelve competition tennis courts, an aggressive Property Owners Association, an elected slate of Municipal officers in the event the community elects to incorporate, and almost one-hundred merchants located in a commercial zone that is separated from the residential area. Also, several churches have been built during the past few years, in addition to the Diamondhead Academy private school which opened on 5 acres of donated land in 1985. The active community spirit has generated many clubs and organizations fulfilling all areas of recreation, sports, entertainment, civic, religious, educational, and cultural needs.
