To Whom it may concern:
I have been researching my family tree over the past twenty years, but I've had a very difficult time in obtaining information on my Gallender (also spelled Gallenger and Gallander) family line of Hancock County, Mississippi. I am hoping that you could recommend or pass this letter on to a historical society member or professional genealogist who could perform some research for me.
I have enclosed four family group records and three census extract forms outlining some of the basic data I have found on my Gallender family. I would like to extend the pedigree lines back a few more generations, obtain biographical facts on my ancestors, and establish solid familial connections through primary [birth, marriage, church, deed, court, military, death, probate, cemetery] and secondary [newspapers, books, manuscripts] sources. I would especially like to find out the names and vital statistics of Joseph Henry Gallender, Sr.'s parents and siblings.
The 1820 Federal Census for Hancock County, Mississippi enumerated Adam Gallenger, aged 45 years and over; Henry Gallenger, aged 16-26 years; and Michael Gallenger, aged 16-26 years [1820 Federal Census for Hancock Co, MS], I would like to obtain more substantial information on these three early Gallenger/Gallander family members and how they are related to one another (perhaps they comprise a father and two sons). The surname undergoes a transformation from Gallenger in 1820 to Gallander in 1850.
The 1850 Federal Census for Gainesville, Hancock County, Mississippi listed Michael Gallander, aged 54 years, overseer, bom in Mississippi with his wife Charlotte, aged 40 years, bom in Kentucky [1850 Federal Census for Hancock Co, MS], The 1850 Federal Census for Shieldsborough, Hancock County, Mississippi listed Henry Gallander, aged 57 years, a pauper, born in Ohio; his wife Mary Ann, aged 37 years, born in Hancock Co, MS; and their children (all born in Hancock Co, MS:
