History. Premilla married Mathias Green on May 18,1843, as shown in the Green Bible. While Mathias was a Presbyterian and Premilla was Baptist, they may have had their marriage performed by a priest or minister at one of the churches in New Orleans. How and where Mathias met Premilla Cameron is unknown. Tradition holds that Mathias married “the oldest and youngest daughters of Jesse Cameron.” This younger wife, Mary “Samantha” Cameron will be discussed shortly. The Green Bible gives Premilla’s date of death as August 2, 1862. At least one of Mathias’ granddaughters told us she died at their family home at English Lookout and was buried in the nearby family cemetery along with her three infant children. She once had a wooden head marker that could be seen from the railroad tracks. The old home site will be discussed shortly. Much of the following information was given to us in 1973 and 1974 through interviews with Mathias Green’s grandchildren and other older relatives living at that time. The following grandchildren and Pauline Heitzmann are the ones that were able to share the most information passed down by their parents: Lillian M. Green Sportomo - daughter of Jesse Green. She was bom on May 4, 1891, and died in Bay St. Louis, MS, in 1985. Lucile “Ruth” Cazeneuve - daughter of Martha Elizabeth Green. She was bom on June 20, 1892, and died in 1991 in Bay St. Louis. Gertrude “Daisy” Green Quintini / Coulon - daughter of Charles Green. She was bom on August 18, 1897, and died in 1983 in Chalmette, LA. Pauline Catenaro Heitzmann - she was the daughter of Mary “Samantha” Cameron and grandmother of Jerry D. Heitzmann. Pauline was bom on April 22, 1883, and died in 1977 in Bay St. Louis. Samantha was the second wife of Mathias Green. We will now discuss where Mathias Green made his home once in America. The first and only record of a residence for Mathias was found in the 1850 Hancock County, MS census. He shows up in the Logtown, MS, area, just north of present day Pearlington, MS. Logtown is approximately nine miles north-west of English Lookout, the known home of Mathias Green. His neighbors in 1850 were John Orr and Christian Koch, known residents of Logtown. The 1850 census showing Mathias Green, lists the oldest child that year as William Green, age 4, bom in Miss.” The next two, Jacob and Daniel, were bom in “La.” It appears Mathias lived somewhere in Mississippi when William was bom in 1846, then moved to Louisiana for the next and subsequent children. He was apparently living in Logtown for only a short time, then moved back to LA, where he settled at English Lookout, LA. At least one older family member told us that Mathias lived in New Orleans before moving to English Lookout. This is supported by the MS Death Certificate for his son, Daniel Green, that states he (Daniel) was bom in “Algiers, 5
