George’s father, Johann “Peter” Riehlmann was born on January 28, 1789 in Oberweiler im Tal and baptized in Hinzweiler, son of Johannes Riehlmann (also spelled Rielmann) and Anna “Margaretha” Jung. Johannes and Magaretha were married on April 6, 1788 at Hinzweiler, but were residents of Oberweiler im Tal and both died there. Johannes Riehlmann was also bom in Oberweiler im Tal, the son of Lorenz Rielmann and Anna Margaretha Beck. Anna Margaretha Beck was bom in Hinzweiler, Germany. Lorenz Rielmann was bom in “Billisheim,” Germany on December 19, 1731. This Billisheim is probably the village located near Mulhouse, France in the Alsace-Lorranine Region that was part of Germany at that time. Lorenz Rielmann’s father was Johann Adam Rielmann/Rullmann who was bom on March 25, 1707 in Billisheim and died there on February 27, 1755. Johann Adam Rullmann’s father was Johannes Rullmann who was bom in 1679 in Billisheim and died there on February 16, 1733. The marriage record for Johann “Peter” Riehlmann and Margaretha Mahler is found at the church in Hinzweiler, Germany. It states they married on December 26, 1834. The church records show Peter died on March 31, 1840 in Oberweiler im Tal and his wife, Margaretha Mahler died on March 28, 1869 in the same town. Her death record says she was the “widow of Peter Riehlmann” and “daughter of Jacob Mahler and Barbara Reiss” and that Margaretha was bom in Elzweiler, Germany. We now know that Johann “Peter” Riehlmann was married twice. First, he married on July 3, 1814 in Hinzweiler to Philippina Catharina Becker/Beker. She was bom in St. Julian, Germany on August 17, 1795. By Philippina, Peter had a large family, with the last being twins - bom on May 26, 1833. Records show Philippina died on May 26, 1833 - apparently from complications of childbirth. Peter then married Margaretha Mahler, and they had three children. Two of Johann “Peter” Riehlmann’s descendants, Peter H. Riehlman of Magalina, CA, and John H. Houck of Fuqay-Varina, NC, and distant cousin, Lois Edinger Patterson of Otisco, NY, have done considerable research on this family, with Peter H. Riehlman collecting some of his information directly from the Evangelische Church Regional Headquarters in Speyer, Germany. While in Speyer at the Lutheran Cathedral, two ladies helped him find records. We spoke to Peter H. Riehlman by phone on November 4, 2004. He said when he was in Speyer, the ladies that helped him were “hurried” and got their information from microfiche and could have made some errors. At issue in his report is: 1) Johannes Riehlmann (son of Lorenz) died on April 6, 1788. Our records from Germany clearly show this to be his marriage date. 2) He shows Johannes Riehlmann (son of Lorenz) married “Margaretha Rosenbach.” Our German records clearly name his wife as “Anna Margaretha Jung.” Mr. Riehlman told us that the “Rosenbach” may have been Anna “Margaretha” Jung’s place of birth. While we have no record showing Margaretha Jung’s place of birth, we do find a small village in Germany called “Rossbach” located about 6
