THE DAILY HERALD Biloxi-Gulfport, Miss., Wednesday, September 16, 1981 Levis Move of historical marker approved by archives The Bay Bureau Travelers on U.S. 90 passing through Bay St. Louis catch a glimpse from the corners of their eyes of a historic site marker on the traffic island west of the Bay Bridge. If plans of the Hancock County Historical Society are accepted by the city government, the marker will be moved to the grounds of City Hall in the central business district. The society recently received approval from the Division of Historic Preservation of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to relocate and rehabilitate the state marker which informs travelers that they are passig through "Old Shieldsborough,” as the city was originally named. "It is a concern that the marker’s present location does not permit interested persons to stop and read. Too, at its present location, it could easily be hit by an automobile and destroyed," according to a society press release. Since the cost of historic markers must be borne by local government, the society is requesting that the Bay St. Louis City Council bear the $550 cost. A committee chaired by Irene Hille will meet and discuss the matter with local officials. Once the marker is moved, a rededication ceremony is planned by the society. \ $14 QQ BIG BELL M* I ■# ^ # STRAIGHT FLARE ■ ■ • ** ** BOOT CUT MOSES 1612 25th Ave. and Courthouse Rd.
