In comparison with the BWYC record of 15 wins, Southern Yacht Club has won the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Cup Championship a total number of 17 times with 3 ties for first place. Pensacola Yacht Club has won 11 times with 2 ties. Biloxi Yacht Club has a total of 8 outright wins. St. Andrews Bay Yacht club won 6 times with I tie and Pass Christian Yacht Club has won 6 times beginning with their first win in 1989. New Orleans Yacht Club has 4 wins. St. Petersburg Yacht Club has 3 wins and 1 tie for 1st place. Mobile Yacht Club has 2 wins overall. Buccaneer and Gulfport Yacht Clubs each own 1 win for 1934 and 1948 respectively.
As a result of the 2001 victory, BWYC has the honor and will host the 83rd GYA Lipton Cup Championship Regatta just one month away on this upcoming 2002 Labor Day weekend. It seems appropriate and to again recognize the successful team of 2001, Commodore Mike Chapoton very ably lead the way with Team Captain Bernard Wolfe, Skippers David Blouin, Sanders Kane, Marc Eagan and Bishop Stieffel. Crew Members of the team included Marcus Eagan (a collegian all American skipper), Gary Taylor, Kippy Chamberlain (a collegian all American crew), Andrew Eagan, Jackson Benvenutti, Randy Santa Cruz and Holden LeBlanc. In addition there were many other avid supporters of the BWYC effort.
GYA sailing records do clearly confirm that BWYC has become and still is a dominant sailing power to contend with since becoming active in Lipton Cup sailing competition some 52 years ago. We can be very proud of the fact that BWYC has made significant progress in national and international sailing competition as well.
As the reigning defending champion of the GYA and current possessor of the Lipton Trophy, BWYC strategy for 2002 will definitely be a little different without Marc Eagan on the BWYC Lipton Team as a skipper or as a crew and as a team leader. Marc has been recruited for and will serve as Chairman of the Race Committee for the 2002 GYA Championship Regatta for the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Trophy. Marc has established a very impressive sailing record as a skipper in Lipton Cup sailing competition. According to GYA and BWYC records, Marc sailed in his first Lipton Cup Championship event as a skipper at Pensacola Yacht Club in 1971. He was called on to sail the 3rd race of the 4 race series. Marc won his race and BWYC went on to win the Lipton Trophy that year. GYA records show that in 30 years, Marc has competed in a total 21 Lipton Cup races as a skipper which includes 8 first place finishes, 4 seconds, 5 thirds, 1 fourth, 1 sixth, 1 CSL and 1 DSQ. Marc has also competed in Lipton Cup races a number of times as a crew. That is certainly a commendable record that Marc and all of BWYC can be proud to claim.
As for BWYC strategy to successfully defend its current GYA Championship and the right to keep the Sir Thomas J. Lipton Trophy, we will have to make good use of our depth, knowledge and experience all of which we have in abundance. Leadership, talent and sufficient resources are necessary givens. Should there
