Prom the Bay of St. Louis and Pass of Christian, I went on to the Bay of Viloxi, where I filled out a commission of Justice of the peace in and for the parish of Viloxy with the name of Jacque L1 Adner, who can neither read nor write, nor can inhabitant of the Bay of Viloxi .."Biloxi was first spelled with a V — not B.

And I will give you at this time a brief account of what Captain Jones did in and for Gulfport.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania June 11, 18*4-2,
and at the age of 19 enlisted serving three years, wounded
in both feet at the Battle of Cold Harbor. Wounds from which
he never completely recovered. After his discharge he returned
to Philadelphia and began drilling for oil. He drilled
13 dry holes. Crippled, discouraged and almost broke — he
had luck with the l^th try and eventually the wells at Bradford Oil
wells I Gulfport was incorporated in 1899 — and in 1902 Captain Jones, then sixty years of age, moved to Gulfport to assume charge of the Gulf and Ship Island railroad.
