Institutions of Higher Learning
Institutions of higher learning at SSC work closely with the office of the Director of Educational Activities at the center. By offering courses in the areas of math, physics, computer science, geophysics, and electrical and mechanical engineering off campus, the various universities plan to expand their scope and reach into the community.
Mississippi State University
The Mississippi State University Research Center is actively involved in ecological research and technical support to resident agencies. Current ecological projects include natural history studies of vertebrates in coastal habitats, management techniques for improving the role of small mammals in forest hydrology and an investigation of the effect of acid rain on pine forests. Additionally, the research center functions as a technical liaison between resident agencies, coastal industries and university researchers, and coordinates academic programs at SSC. In addition, MSU is expanding its programs in graduate engineering studies.

University of New Orleans
The University of New Orleans has an office located in the Mississippi Technology Transfer Center. The purpose of the office is to foster scientific and educational linkages between the university and SSC through the support of research, education and technology transfer. The office serves as a liaison between its student population at Stennis and the various offices and departments at UNO in addition to providing information about research capabilities and other aspects of the university.
University of Southern Mississippi
The University of Southern Mississippi is represented at SSC by the Division of Lifelong Learning. The mission of this office is to serve the resident agencies with support for handling the logistics for planned conferences. USM also coordinates college courses as well as several degree programs to help meet the educational needs of SSC employees.
USM Center for Marine Science
The University of Southern Mississippi Center for Marine Science provides graduate programs leading to master’s and doctoral degrees. Courses required for this progam are taught entirely on-site although students may also enroll in courses offered at either the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campuses or at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, Miss. Collaboration with scientists employed with the various governmental agencies at SSC is encouraged, providing students with unparalleled opportunities for research activity. Current research interests of the Marine Science Center faculty are focused on various aspects of biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and remote sensing of coastal and open ocean environments.
