September - 1897
"The Sea Co^st Echo" of Bay St. Louis,Kiss., Sept. *+, 1897 - from Kemphis Commercial-Appeal
AFTER DAHLGREN1S SCALP ^ipht Applicants for the Bay St.Louis Collectorship
A Washington special to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal says:
The eighth applicant for the collectorship of customs at Shieldsboro (or Bay St. Louis, as better known), Miss, was recorded at the treasury department today.
B. F. Lindsay of Pass Christian, said to be a relative of the secretary, and a Kill-ite is the man.
This plum is regarded as of some importance and there is a spirited contest for it. It is one of the best offices in the state and has jurisdiction over the customnhouse.s at Bay_St. Loui§., Biloxi and Pascagoula, embracing four deputy collectors and inspectors, and one special deputy collector at Bay St. Louis.
The recent order of the president, the democratic holders of their offices vill be sorry to learn, exempts the employes of this district from the classified service. The new collector can appoint all his subordinates, who will only be subjected to a noncompetitive examination prescribed by the secretary of the treasury, with the exception of a special deouty, who is designated cashier of the district, and is subjected to EXHsinxttKH no examination whatever.
The official life of Collector A. T'. Dahlgren, whose term will expire in December, vill be prolonged by the fight of Republicans for his place.
