Proposed Revised Main Street National Register Historic District
FEMA and the SHPO have concurred and will recommend a proposed change to the boundaries and period of significance of the Main Street National Register Historic District based on new documentation compiled by FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The amended district is eligible for listing on the NRHP under Criterion C for Architecture because^it is a locally significant group of vernacular houses that are characteristic of the Bay StJ -Lotu1s area. As originally listed, the district contained six buildings, all of which contributed to its historic significance. This proposed amendment removes one building that no longer survives,.a second extensively rebuilt building and a vacant lot. It also adds two additional^contributing buildings and one non-contributing building and adjusts the boundaryjp'accorfcunodate these changesXThe original period of significance of the district, not explicitly^stated but implied by the dates'of the buildings, extended from circa 1875 to circa 1920. This'ainendment plrojtoses extending the period of significance to ca. 1955.
