that was the heaviest rain and the terriblest lightning I've ever seen. Willie had brought me over to stay with Ruby when Mark Samuel was born on September 19th, 1956. The storm was Sept 22nd, Matt was in the kitchen and when I walked in there, I said Matt come, look quick, the wires are a fire outside. So he called the firemen and they were there in a jiffy and put the fire out so I said call them and tell them to come and get a cup of coffee so as he couldn't make them hear, he motioned to them and they came and stood under the little shelter that was over the porch by the kitchen door and they said that was the first coffee or anything they had had since early that morning. So she told him she didn't see how she could as her health at that time was terrible, her heart was in bad shape, she had bad spells at times and couldn't breathe and they'd have to work with her some times for an hour or longer. I saw her one time when she was carrying her fifth child and I never wanted to see her again as she looked "horrible". It took her husband, mother-in-law, doctor and nurse to hold her legs and arms down to keep her from killing her baby, as her arms and legs would draw right up into her stomach, her eyes rolled back in her head and no one could imagine how terrible she did look unless they could have seen her. Any way she told Joe she'd look over the play and she?d see what she could do. So, she copied all the parts as 53
