Church on one Thursday each month. The Senior Adults also received copies of their first cookbook compiled by the group.
In January of 1980, a love offering to help pay travel expenses was taken for the Sam Turner family, missionaries to Kenya, East Africa, on the death of his parents. In March, two men of the Church, Jack Hode and Ronnie Magee went to the Dominican Republic to help build a new church. In May a special love offering was taken for the tornado victims in our church family. In August the Greater Gulf Coast Crusade for Christ was held in the Gulfport Coliseum with Rev. Jim Wilson as Preacher. We also observed World Hunger Day in our Church. In October the Senior Adults went to Ridgecrest, N C for Senior Adult Chautauqua. The "Children?s Hour" a new ministry held at 6:00 on Sunday evenings, was set up under the leadership of Pat Barber and Gwen and Stephanie Crawford.
The year 1981 was the year of "Bold Mission Projects" in the Church. The Church voted to use 2% of all tithes not already designated for funding these projects. The membership was urged to give contributions above the regular tithes. In September, three of our membership, Sam Wilboum, Floyd Goughenour, and Les Gray, went to Sparta, Wisconsin, to do carpenter work at Gospel Baptist Church. In October we welcomed home Thomas and Marie Thompson from their mission work in Israel. In November, Lorene Hill and Ann Land went to Barbados on a "sewing mission" work. Robert White was hired to work during the summer as the Youth Director for the Church. On May 17, the Church approved $1000 to be used to start work on the Retreat Site and Youth Recreation Center on land which had been donated to the Church by Dr. M. L. Dodson. On May 30, the first annual Fishing Rodeo was held on the Retreat Site. A fund for the church sound system was also established. In May, the steeple of the Church was repaired by Dillman Roofing Co. at a cost of $1,800. The Church also recommended that new handrails be installed at the entrances. On November 29, the Church voted to rescind the previous motion for building the kitchen at a cost of $6,500 over a 15 year period which would have cost about $150,000 with high interest included.
