'Don't have your hands too tight'
, DOUGLAS WILLIAMS
??Down through the years, I can : remember my momma, Rosine, ?. p telling me one thing, ?Don?t have vj your hands too tight, then nothing can get in them or out of them.?
?It has to do with being stingy or selfish?it just isn?t too rewarding in life.
Bay St. Louis Polic Chief Douglas Williams remembers, ??She?d tell me, ?Don?t let nobody be nicer to you than you are to them. Treat people the way you want to be treated.?
?All this came from a lady who was widowed and left with four sonswhen I was a teenager.
?High school was a rare thing in those days, but I remember when my father died she wanted us to finish our education. And that diploma has carried me a long way.
?Our schooling was so important to her that she took in washing and ironing just so we wouldn?t have to quit. But it?s not just that school diploma, I?ve tried to follow her teaching, too.
?Through the vears in my police work, I?ve tried to approach people in a kind, friendly manner. But sometimes, people take kindness and mistake it for cowardess, so sometimes I have to veer off.
?But I always remember what my mother said. That?s about the best advice there is.?
