Bureau is very proud of its efforts to assist in developing one of the best African-American Heritage & Cultural Tours in the Southeast.
The unique existence of St. Augustine Seminary in Bay St. Louis' definitely “tops the list” as a one-of-a- kind attraction that makes this tour product so special.
St. Augustine Seminary, the first Roman Catholic Seminary in the entire United States to train and ordain African American young men for the Priesthood and Brotherhood, was established in 1922 by the Brothers of the Divine Word, from Germany.
The seminary is available for tours and retreats and is now a retirement home for those very priests and brothers that it ordained many years ago.
On the lush grounds of the seminary stand quietly beautiful live oaks draped in Spanish moss, statues and shrines, benches that await anyone’s visit, and a walk-through grotto, hand-built by the father of one of the young seminarians in the early 1900's. This young seminarian later became & retired priest at the seminary.
As a result of St. Augustine Seminary, St. Rose de Lima, African American-based Catholic Church in
Bay St. Louis, is one of the highlights of any tour or visit to this very special seaside community. Established
in 1976, St. Rose is one of the most active parishes in the area.
