Newly Identified National Register Historic Districts
Proposed Jeff Davis Avenue National Register Historic District
FEMA determined with SHPO concurrence that the only newly identified historic district in Hancock County is the proposed Jeff Davis Avenue Historic District. The proposed JeffDavis Avenue Historic District is the last remaining substantial concentration of historic buildings still standing in the City of Waveland in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The proposed district is eligible for listing on the NRHP under Criterion A for Community Planning and Development and Criterion C for Architecture. It is significant for Community Planning and Development because it represents changes that occurred in settlement patterns in Waveland from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century. It is significant in the area of Architecture because if contains the largest concentration of late 19th and early 20th centuiy buildings remaining in Waveland, ' representing a variety of vernacular house types and stylistic influences.-This area contains 39 • contributing buildings and 23 non-contributing buildings, Tlie-period ojsignificance extends--’ from ca. 1880, when the earliest surviving buildings were constructed, to 1960.
