Local Civil RigTits Veterans Featured in Series During the summer and fall, MDAH and the Mississippi Humanities Council partnered with communities and organizations across the state on a series of programs featuring local civil rights veterans and presentations on the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum now under construction in Jackson and the collections of the department. The five “Freedom Summer and Beyond” programs attracted more than 325 people. “The struggle for Civil Rights in Mississippi was a grassroots movement involving scores of local people who helped transform our state,” said Mississippi Humanites Council director Stuart Rock-off. “The Humanities Council was honored to support these programs, which gave voice to these local heroes and honored the work they have done.” MDAH partnered with the Humphreys County chapter of the NAACP and the Humphreys County Cultural Museum on Freedom Summer and Beyond: Belzoni the inaugural program in July, held at the O.M. McNair Elementary School in Belzoni. The featured speaker was Bessie Ree Moore Thurman. In August the department worked with the DeSoto County African American History Symposium and the DeSoto County Museum to stage a panel that included Gemenie Bowdrie, Gertrude Bridgeforth, Willie Dobbins, Theron Long, Leslie McLemore, Thomas Plunkett, Final Print in Welty Series by Barry Moser Released The fifth and final engraving of a Eudora Welty portrait by award-winning artist Barry Moser has been issued in time for the holidays. It joins the earlier works in the series, each depicting Welty at a different time in her life. From a limited run of 100, all prints are signed and numbered by the artist. Donated by Moser, they sell for $250 each, plus tax and shipping, and all proceeds support the Eudora Welty House and Garden. A longtime friend and collaborator of Eudora Welty’s, Moser illustrated a limited edition of her book The Robber Bridegroom and won the National Book Award for de- sign and illustration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The Canton Chapter of the NAACP co-sponsored the September program in Canton that featured John Brown and Dr. William Truly. The Young People’s Project of McComb coordinated a program that featured MacAr-thur Cotton, Jessie Harris, Joe Lewis, Jessie Morris, Brenda Travis, and Hollis Watkins at the McComb branch of the Pike-Amite-Walthall Library System in October. The final program of the series was held in November at the Westside Community Center in Gulfport. Co-sponsored by the Quarters Group, 33rd Avenue Alumni Association, and Concerned Citizens Coalition, it featured Gulf Coast civil rights activists James Black, Robert Cook, and Boyd James III. Statehood Day December 10, noon Old Capitol Museum A living history event with Speaker of the House John R. Lynch, Governor Andrew Longino, and others reflecting on key events in Mississippi s past.
