NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration LAGNIAPPE Volume 14 Issue 10 John C. Stennis Space Center October 17, 1991 Stennis Family Day To Be Held Oct. 26 On Oct. 26 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., the grounds of Stennis Space Center will be alive with activities, demonstrations, lectures and special events for all ages dur: ing SSC's Family Day celebration. All NASA, resident agency and contractor employees and their families are invited to attend. The day-long celebration is being held in conjunction with the founding of Stennis Space Center. Thirty years ago this month, the federal government announced the selection of this site to locate the nation's test facility for static firing all first and second stages of the Saturn V rocket for the Apollo lunar landing program. In addition, Family Day is being held to honor the collective contributions of all 4,500 NASA John C. Stennis Space Center ♦ » ♦ . Throughout the years, SSC has evolved into a multidisciplinary community that is home to 18 other federal and state agencies engaged in space, environmental programs and the national defense. A wide variety of activities and events is planned that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. Kicking off the festivities is a children's costume parade with the theme “Space, Oceans, Earth.” Following the parade, NASA Administrator Richard Truly will cut the ribbon to officially open the newly redesigned Visitors Center. At 11 a.m., SSC Director Roy Estess and special guests Truly and Dr. William Lenoir, NASA associate administrator for space flight, will host a 30th anniversary ceremony in the Special Events Tent. Astronauts Kenneth Bowersox and Daniel Bursch will also attend. Many of SSC’s facilities will be open to give everyone the opportunity to see the important work conducted here. Guests can take walking, driving or bus tours. The NASA Art Program commissioned Al Chinchar to do a graphic illustration depicting 30 years of manned space flight. This mural was displayed during the 1991 Paris Air Show and will now become a permanent addition to the SSC Visitors Center, set to officially reopen during Family Day, Oct. 26. SSC’s Annual Charity Drive Under Way NASA, agency, and contractor employees rallied together Oct. 10 in SSC’s Visitors Center auditorium to launch the 1992 Combined Agencies Campaign (CAC). This year’s drive, which runs through Nov. 15, is expected to raise $172,000. Rear Adm. John Chubb, commander of the Naval Oceanography Command at Stennis, is this year’s CAC chairman. During the ceremony, Chubb encouraged all employees to join together in their effort to help surpass this year’s goal. He added, "The Combined Agencies Campaign is a great mechanism for federal employees to participate in collective giving for those who need our help.” The goal of the annual charity drive reflects the combined contributions of Stennis Space Center's federal and industrial contractor employees. Chubb also heads the federal portion of the drive. Jack Throop, program director of Lockheed Engineering and Sciences Co., is chairing the industrial side of the campaign. Stennis Space Center’s federal agencies have pledged $100,000 toward this year's drive, and the private companies have committed to raising $72,000. Over the past five years, the CAC has raised in excess of $700,000 at SSC.- During the kickoff, it was pointed out that all employees have a choice in designating the agencies and the geographical locations that will receive their individual donations. Commenting on this opportunity, Throop said, ' ‘The thing that makes this campaign is the local aspect of it. You feel as though you're supporting your own.” Roy Estess, Stennis Space Center director, is chairman of this year’s Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) conducted by the Mississippi Coast Association of Federal Employees (MCAFA). During the 1992 charity drive, the Coast-wide goal is $600,000. The federal portion of Stennis Space Center's drive is part of the MCAFA campaign. The CFC solicits contributions from the 25,000 federal employees on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Estess said the CFC goal of $600,000 is a significant figure that will make a dif-(See CAMPAIGN, Page 6)
