We have proved in the past that we are more than willing to do this." He added, “It is the natural instinct of human beings that when we see someone in trouble we respond. Today, there are people in need right here along the Coast. The CFC is an effective way for us to respond.'' The Combined Federal Campaign kickoff was held Sept. 24 at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport. The special guest at the ceremony was Vaughan Johnson, all-pro linebacker for the New Orleans Saints. After remarks at Stennis’ CAC ceremony, the audience viewed the first-ever locally produced campaign video. In addition, the first Platinum Award to be given at SSC was presented to the NAVOCEANO comptroller's office which contributed over 85 percent of their giving potential before the kickoff. SSC employee contributions support needy agencies in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Pearl River counties in Mississippi, as well as St. Tammany Parish and the Greater New Orleans area in Louisiana. There are over 650 local, national and international agencies. NASA personnel recently received a group achievement award (photo, right) for outstanding performance on the design and construction of the $69 million Component Test Facility (CTF) at Stennis Space Center. The group award was presented by Jack Rogers (fourth from right), director of center operations at SSC. Pictured are (from left) Randall Canady, construction manager; Kevin Power, project engineer; John Webb, design manager; Charlene Rhode, secretary; Rogers; Lenn Wall, Mississippi State University co-op student; Kern Witcher, DACS project manager; and Gerald Pitalo, chief, CTF project office. The CTF will be used to develop and test high-fidelity turbo-machinery for the National Launch System, a joint U.S. Air Force/NASA program.
