Gainesville, Miss., May 5, 1866
The Circuit Court for Hancock County, Miss.,/ias just adjourned. Two days were	occupied with/the trial	of	one Schencks, indicted for
the murder of	Henry S. Jopes. Charles A.	Smith,	District Attorney,
appeared for the State; for the defence, Col. D. C. Glenn and Hon.
R. Seal.	y
The former (D. C. Glenn), late Attorney General of Mississippi, is one of the most finished orators I have ever heard, combining deep learning with	impassioned eloquence.	The	latter	(Roderick Seal) has
risen step by	step in the profession,	and	is now	in the front rank,
proverbial for his profound study of his cases, his acuteness, his instinctive knowledge of juries, and his peculiar power as a pleader. A strong team, I assure you, are these two men when associated.
Conduct of Murder Trial
The District Attorney manifested extraordinary energy and skill —and the Court enforced rigidly the rules of evidence—but the prisoner was acquitted.
He and the deceased quarreled about a matter of debt; deceased used to other parties threatening language in regard to the accused, who was warned to be on his guard. Two days afterward he borrowed a gun, sought out Jopes, and deliberately shot him dead. He made no effort to escape. No arms were found on Jopes.
