Postcards reflect lifestyle of Coast in 1901
Thanks to the Detroit Publishing Co., who in 1901 contracted local photographers to photograph scenes to be made into postcards, we can enjoy a wonderful
of
tum-of-the-cen-tury lifestyle in Bay St. Louis.
It was a slower, idyllic time when a social occasion could be as simple as a bicycle ride along the shelled beachroad. Every beachfront home had a pier, and the gazebo, or “shoo-fly” was a common part of outdoor architecture.
A promotional brochure, “The Mexican Gulf Coast, Winter Resort, ” also published about 1901, describes Bay St. Louis as a place where “many New Orleans people have their summer homes. And during the heated term, entire families, with carriages, saddle-horses, bird and pets of every kind, move out to enjoy the delightful sea breeze and the boating, bathing and fishing. . .”

Flashback was 216 N. Beach, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Boyles. Shortly after the photograph was taken, the home burned and the Boyles erected the Tulane Hotel, a popular summer, winter and health
resort, which could accommodate 60 guests.
