11/15/1824 - John [licks Evans was born in Wayne County, Mississippi.
1832 - He moved with his family to Clarke County about two miles north of the Wayne County line where he was reared to manhood. He received a good common school education. He was numbered among the successful planters of the county and owned a valauble estate of about nine hundred acres. He served a long term of years as County Surveyor, until failing sight compelled his resignation.
1845 - he married Sarah A. Phillips, daughter of Thompson and Lydia (Seale) Phillips. She was born in Marion County, Mississippi on Jan 16, 1828. She died January 16, 1913 at age 85. She is burriea at Andrews Chapel in Clarke County, Mississippi. Miss Adddie Lee resided with and cared for John H. anc Sarah Evans for many years prior to their deaths.
He served for many years as Surveyor of Clarke County and resided at Lot 14 in DeSoto, Mississippi during the closing years of his life.
Prior to 1860 he was a Major in the State Militia and became a recruiting officer when hostilities broke out and later became a member of the Thirteenth Mississippi Infantry. He was also a Lt. in Company A, 41st Mississippi Infantry. At the end of the conflict, he was engaged in the manufacture of salt at the government salt works for the benefit of the destitute families in the state.
John H. and Sarah had nine chilcren.
