Joseph Henry Gallender, Sr. enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 18, 1861 in Trinity, Louisiana. He served as a private in the Catahoula Guerrillas Co. D, Wheat's Battalion and Co. I 15th Louisiana Infantry. He was discharged on July 10,1861 in Virginia after sustaining a disabling injury to his right foot [Joseph Henry Gallender, Sr. Civil War record]. He returned to Louisiana, but when Vicksburg was under siege in 1863, he went there to aid the Confederates and never returned. Joseph Henry Gallender, Sr. married Julia Elizabeth White on November 11, 1862 in Vidalia, Concordia Parish, Louisiana [Concordia Parish. LA marriage record].
One of Joseph Henry Gallender, Sr. and Julia Elizabeth White's eleven grandchildren was Corinne Myra Gallender, my 93 year old grandmother, who has inspired me to pursue this genealogical research as a legacy to her.
