were orphaned. Mathias Green supported his family in several ways. From the 1850 Hancock census, we know he was a “ship carpenter.” This fits with the information found in the Swedish Archives pertaining to him leaving his ship in Boston harbor. From one older relative, Mr. George Cameron, in 1972, we were told that Mathias was an oyster fisherman and owned a schooner called the “Petral.” Others also told us that he was also a fisherman. This all fits with what we find going on at English Lookout in the early 1900s. Mathias’ granddaughter, Lillian Green Spotomo, said she was told that her grandfather was a “tall man, with blond hair, and blue eyes.”
As previously discussed, Mathias’ wife died and was buried at English Lookout in 1862. The exact date of Mathias Green’s death is not known. We do know that he married his second wife, Mary “Samantha” Cameron, in Hancock County on March 9, 1865, and that Samantha was a “widow” when she remarried on February 25, 1869, to John Rhodes in Hancock County. Thus, Mathias died sometime during this period or around 1867. Until we can find something more specific, we will use 1867 as his date of death.
We assume he was buried next to his wife at English Lookout. One of his granddaughters, Gertrude “Daisy” Green Coulon, said her father, Jacob Green, told her that Mathias died of “typhoid fever in Amite, LA,” and she assumed he is buried there. The only connection to Amite, LA, is on the Louisiana Death Certificate of Caroline Green Andrews, Mathias’ daughter, who died in Slidell, LA, in 1936. This record clearly says she was bom in “Amite, La.” With Amite, LA, approximately 80 miles from English Lookout, we feel this possible, but unlikely.
The following are the 12 children bom to Mathias Green and his first wife, Premilla Cameron:
I.	Calvin Green - according to the Green Family Bible, he was bom on March 17, 1844, and died in “1849.” The 1850 mortality census of Hancock County, MS, gives “June 1850” as his death date, said he was age 5 at the time, and died of Cholera. He was probably buried at English Lookout.
II.	William Green - he was bom on April 17,1846, as listed in the old Family Green Bible. The Bible also says he was “Shot at the battle of Atlanta in 1863.” He was no doubt fighting for one of the Mississippi regiments of the CSA when he was killed. He was probably buried in or near Atlanta, GA. He would have been approximately 17 years old when he died, and we have no records of a marriage or children.
III.	Jacob L. Green - the family Bible lists his date of birth as July 16, 1848. His head marker in the Lakeshore, MS, cemetery verifies this date of birth and gives his date of death as February 25, 1916. It gives his middle initial as “L.” which he added later in life, as we have already explained. His death certificate in LA, says “Jacob L. Green,” native of LA, died on February 25, 1916 at Lake Catherine, LA,” and the remains were “shipped
