ship, Isabella, carrying ?Maria Zingerling,? age 34, from Germany with ?Francisca Zingerling,? age 11 (1833), and ?Josepf Zingerling? age 10 (1834). It appears Maria was moving to the United States to be with her husband. With their youngest child born in 1834, we can assume Joseph Zengerling (Sr.) immigrated after 1834. This fits with the immigration information we have on his brother, John Zengerling, of Hancock County, MS coming to New York in 1835. In the 1860 census of Newark, New Jersey house #2131, we find ?Joseph Singlaluf? age 58, farmer, born in Prussia. His wife ?Mary? age 58, born in Prussia, Frank age 27 (1833), Ann age 24 (1836), both bom in Prussia, Mary age 13 (1847), born in New York, Ann age 10 (1850), bom in New Jersey, and Catherine, age 7 (1853), also born in NJ. These families are also found in the 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses of New Jersey. On August 30, 1870, ?Joseph Zengerling? made his Will in Newark, NJ, (later he made a codicil), naming his wife, Maria, and daughters ?Catharine Zengerling? and ?Anna Othen.? His wife, Maria Zengerling, made her own Will in Essex County, New Jersey on September 18, 1880 naming children, Joseph, Frances, and another child whose name was illegible. Joseph Zengerling died November 8, 1888 in Newark, NJ. Mr. Hugh Singerline told us that he was buried without a headmarker in the Holy Sepulcher Catholic Church Cemetery in Newark (now called East Orange), New Jersey. The children of Frank ?Joseph? Zengerling and Anna Maria Elizabetha Bense are: A. Francisca ?Frances? Zengerling - bom on November 21, 1831 in Natzungen, Germany. She is on the ship with her mother in 1844 arriving in New York. She is absent from her parents home in the 1860 NJ census. She was listed as an heir in her mother?s Will dated September 18, 1880. B. Johann ?Joseph? Zengerling - bom on January 6, 1834 in Natzungen. He was with his mother in 1844 when their ship landed in New York and was age 10. He is listed as Frank, age 27 (1833) in the New Jersey 1860 census as bom in Prussia and in the home of his parents. He is listed in the 1870 Newark census as ?Joseph Singerling? age 36, bom in Prussia. He is living with ?Anna? age 33, Joseph 9, Anton 7, Bernard 5, and William age 3. In the 1880 census of Newark, NJ, he is listed incorrectly as ?George Zingerling? age 45(1835), bom in Germany with wife, Mary age 41, Joseph 19, Anthony 17, Benjamine 16, Charles 15, Willie 13, Theresa 10, and Freddie 2. Two of these children, Anthony and Benjamine are listed as ?Singerline? in the 1900 Newark census with their wives and children. This Joseph is also listed in the Will of his mother, Anna Zengerling, dated September 18, 1880. He died in Newark in 1905. Mr. Hugh Singerline is a descendant of the above Joseph Zengerling (1834). He said Joseph first married Anna Hoppe in 1857 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Newark, NJ. The record names all four parents and states that Joseph was from Natzungen, Germany, although the spelling is a little off. After Anna Hoppe died, Joseph Zengerling (1834) married a second time to Maria ?Mary? Reinhardt, and it is thought that Frederick William Zengerling was bom to Reinhardt. Joseph married a third time to (name unknown), an Irish woman. 7
